Alan Feezel broke away from the grill at the 6th Street Diner to bring out his shorthair, Harley to hunt some pheasant. I set out some birds in the North Tinkerfarm prairie and milo strips. Harley did a nice job finding the pheasant in the thick, fall cover and Alan only let one fly away.
Fall Field Trial Coming up on Oct. 27th
The Central Prairie Field Trial Club will be holding its fall trial here in the Sandy Run Hunt Co. fields on October, 27 2018. That Saturday will have the Amateur Shooting Dog, Amateur Derby, Amateur Gun Dog, and Amateur Puppy Trials.
If you have a good hunting dog, you should consider entering in the Amateur Gun Dog Trial. The dogs in this trial run the course with another dog, need to be able to find birds, back dogs on point and hold their point until the bird flushes. Sounds like your dog can do that easy enough, bring him out, maybe you will get one of mine in a brace.
If you are looking for hunting dogs and puppies, you can make some contacts with some folks who know where there are some of the nicest hunting dogs for sale or on the way. Plus the trials give anyone a chance to see some classy looking dogs in action. Bring your horse, ATV or walking shoes to be part of the gallery.
Check out some video from the club’s last fall trial at Sandy Run.

Jim, Bill, Josh and Matt, Pheasant and Quail Hunt
Jim and Bill Siatos came out with Josh Bruhn and Matt Tranter to hunt some pheasant and quail. They picked a hot, sticky, sunny afternoon for their hunt. Jeff Powell brought a pile of dogs to find the birds it the thick, Clubhouse Field. It was a good hunt for the conditions with Jeff having to trade out dogs a couple of times, but with some good shooting they still came back with a bunch of birds.
Hunter, Brent and Kent w/Sam, Pheasant and Chukar Hunt
Brent and Hunter Brooks came out for a pheasant and chukar along with Kent Schluter and Brent’s setter, Sam. They picked a sunny, hot, early fall afternoon, but Sam was still able to find most of the pheasant and chukar stashed around the Clubhouse and Pasture Fields.
Bill, Terri and Billy, Pheasant Hunt
Bill and Terri Booker brought out their shorthair, Billy, for an early season pheasant hunt. Billy did a nice job finding the birds in the thick cover of the Clubhouse Field. Great way to start out the season.
First Continental Pheasant Shoot of the Season Coming Up
Sandy Run Hunt Co. will hold it’s first Continental Pheasant Shoot on Saturday, October, 20th. Come out early and do some warm up on clay pigeons before heading to the field to unload on some high flying pheasants. Then I will feed you some lunch, before you can head back out to find of the birds that got away. Call, text or email me to get your reservation while I still have spots available.
Steve, Rigby and Willie, Pheasant Hunt
Steve Weidman started out the new Sandy Run season with a pheasant hunt. Steve brought out his Large Munsterlander, Rigby, and Springer Spaniel, Willie to find the pheasants in the Clubhouse and Pasture Fields. The first rooster of the season came out high and fast and took a few pellets, but kept flying. Steve finished the hunt with dogs finding that bird hunkered down along the north pond levee and he didn’t get away this time.
Rod, Ava and Hildy, Pheasant Hunt
Rod Carlson came down for a couple hunts. The first day he picked was a frog-strangler, lots of rain. I have successfully hunted pheasants in the rain, but not this day, just too wet. After an enjoyable evening, nights sleep and breakfast, Rod woke to dryer day and a better pheasant and chukar hunt.
Brad, Sadie and Zip, Chukar Hunt
Brad Diecker came out to hunt some chukar. Travis Devall brought his pointer, Sadie and setter, Zip out to the south Tinkerfarm Field to find the partridge scattered around the prairie edges. Brad had a good hunt and came back with all his birds.
