Fall Field Trial Coming Up October 29th!

The Central Prairie Field Trial Club will be holding its fall trial here in the Sandy Run Hunt Co. fields on October, 29 2017.  Sunday will have the Amateur Shooting Dog, Amateur Derby, Amateur Gun Dog, and Amateur Puppy Trials.

If you have a good hunting dog, you should consider entering in the Amateur Gun Dog Trial.  The dogs in this trial run the course with another dog, need to be able to find birds, back dogs on point and hold their point until the bird flushes.  Sounds like your dog can do that easy enough, bring him out, maybe you will get one of mine in a brace.

If you are looking for hunting dogs and puppies, you can make some contacts with some folks who know where there are some of the nicest hunting dogs for sale or on the way.  Plus the trials give anyone a chance to see some classy looking dogs in action.  Bring your horse, ATV or walking shoes to be part of the gallery.

Check out some video from the club’s last fall trial at Sandy Run.

QUGA Annual Banquet Coming up Sept. 23rd.

The Cumberland Chapter of the Quail and Upland Game Alliance will be holding its annual banquet on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the Vandalia Moose Lodge.  The doors open at 5pm and dinner is served at 6pm.  Tickets are $15/each at the door.  We have a ton of stuff we will be auctioning off, live and silent as well as bucket raffles.  I think we have at least a dozen firearms that can be won at the banquet, including some really nice shotguns.  The chapter puts on the youth pheasant hunt out here at Sandy Run and does a lot of habitat around Fayette County.  Lots of fun and great chance to get some nice prizes.

Prairie Biological Diversity

Every year when I mow paths in the Clubhouse Field I set the tractor bucket to catch seeds, leaves and critters.  This video clip and picture doesn’t come close to showing the diversity of insects, larvae, spiders, worms and ticks that get collected.  The bucket is just a moving mass of insects like the massive praying mantis to spiders so small you can barely identify them without magnification.  Lots of bird feed crawling around out there.

Central Prairie Field Trial Club Spring Trial

The Central Prairie Field Trial Club will hold its spring field trial at Sandy Run on Saturday, March 25th.  The Jim McNutt Memorial Shooting Dog Trial will start at 8 am. Followed by lunch and then the amateur derby, gun dog and puppy trials.  If you are interested in joining in the fun, call Butch Spelbring, 217 343 2871 for more information or to enter your dog.  Drawing for braces will done Wedneday evening March 22.  This is also a good time to come out and watch some nice dog work, bring your horse or ATV and join the gallery following the action.

QUGA Banquet

The Cumberland Trail Chapter of the Quail and Upland Game Alliance will be having its Annual Banquet this Saturday, Sept. 17.  Doors open at 5 pm at the Vandalia Moose Lodge, tickets are $15 each.  Fun times and lots of guns, prints, and stuff to win. I even have 2 hunts up for auction. One of Jeff Marshall’s pups will be up for auction. Come on out and support a great organization that puts on our Youth Pheasant Hunt and does a lot of local upland game habitat work.

Pointer Pups Ready to Go Now

Jeff Marshall has a nice litter of pointer pups from his dam, Homestead’s Jill and Fenton’s Elhew Bo.  These pups are getting close to being 12 weeks old and there 3 males and 3 females available.  Check out the pics, good looking dogs.  Give Jeff Marshall a call 217-370-6176.

Ava’s Setter Puppy

I went up to Jeff Marshall’s Homestead Kennels to get a closer look at all the Setter pups he has.  Some great looking dogs.  The first litter is about 9 to 10 weeks now and there is one orange and white female remaining for sale.  The breeding is Ava and Brad Hire’s Roundabout.  Check out the pics.  Give Jeff Marshall a call 217-370-6176.

Puppies, puppies, puppies and more puppies

My friend and world class dog trainer, Jeff Marshall, has had a busy summer and a pile of English Setter and English Pointer puppies available.   All of these dogs come from great hunting stock and are bred to have the desire, smarts and nose that awesome bird dogs require.  Give Jeff Marshall a call 217-370-6176.

The first litter is out of Ava, a dog I had in my kennel last season and Brad Hire’s stud, Buck.  They will be 7 weeks old and ready to go on Monday, August 1st.  There are 4 females still available in the litter, 1 orange and white and the remainder tri-colored.  The sire is out of a line with Shadow Oak Bo and Grid Iron

The other Setter litter is out of Jeff’s female B, which won the Open Derby Dog of the Year and sired by Buck.  There are 5 females and 4 males, with 4 orange and white, and 5 tri-colored.   Both parents are great hunters, this litter will be ready on August 23.

Jeff’s first pointer litter is out of Jim McNutt’s female Homestead Jill and sired by Bad River.  He has one orange and white female, one liver and white female and three orange and white males ready now.  They will be 8 weeks old on August 1.   Bad River has some nice lineage with Up Close, Sinbad and bunch of Elhew blood in past generations.

The second pointer litter was just whelped on July 27, with the breeding of Jeff’s young female Georgia and bred with Bad River.  I will let you know and get some more pics as the litter matures.

These puppies are priced right too.  Great deal for the breeding behind these dogs, $550 for setters and $450 for pointer pups.  Give Jeff Marshall a call 217-370-6176.

Jeff will also have started puppies available this winter, just in time for the second half of the game preserve season.

Bill Warix – German Shorthaired Pointer Pups

Bill Warix has some German Shorthair Pointer puppies for sale.  These dogs are out of his male, Whip and his son’s bitch, Lady.  Both dogs have been out here at Sandy Run hunting pheasant and quail and have a lot of drive to find birds.  Contact Bill at 314 565-6274 for more information.
