Bud Harold came over with his pointer Nitro for some quail hunting. I spent an enjoyable morning in the Clubhouse Field as Nitro found the coveys and then singles around the prairie. Check out the shooting, not sure Bud ever missed and got several doubles.
The Central Prairie Field Trial Club will be holding its spring trial here in the Sandy Run Hunt Co. fields on Saturday March 31, 2018.
If you have a good hunting dog, you should consider entering in the Amateur Gun Dog Trial. The dogs in this trial run the course with another dog, need to be able to find birds, back dogs on point and hold their point until the bird flushes. Sounds like your dog can do that easy enough, bring him out, maybe you will get one of mine in a brace.
If you are looking for hunting dogs and puppies, you can make some contacts with some folks who know where there are some of the nicest hunting dogs for sale or on the way. Plus the trials give anyone a chance to see some classy looking dogs in action. Bring your horse, ATV or walking shoes to be part of the gallery.
Whitey Willms set up a hunt for Dustin Eccles, Todd Parke, Scott Spencer and Bob Fullar. Steve Sanders took a couple to the south end of the Cabin Field and Travis Devall took the remainder to the prairie and milo strips on the north end. Some nice dog work and good shooting for both groups.
Phil Layman got an overnight upland bird hunt for Christmas, from Alex, Tyler and Ryan. Colton Wilkins took them out to the Clubhouse for their first afternoon hunt. They had a good hunt, cleaning up most of the pheasant and chukar but leaving some quail. Some smoked ribs for dinner, a few beverages and then up for bacon and eggs for breakfast. They decided to go back to the Clubhouse Field to get a crack at their leftover quail plus a pile of new birds. Travis Devall and his dogs did a nice job and they came back with most of their quarry.
Kevin, Tommy and Kurt Diekroeger came out to hunt quail for a couple days. Kevin brought his setter Penny and Tommy his brittany, Abby to find the coveys around the old Tinkerfarm pond. After two days of great covey rises and interesting timber shooting, they only left a few birds in the thick brambles.
Tom, TJ, Ben and Jim Jenkins came out for a family pheasant hunt. Colton Wilkins brought out his shorthair and setter to find and point the big birds in the Clubhouse Field. I think they got chances at all their birds, some more than once and came back with a bench full.
Joe Jahraus brought out his friend Ryan Mayhaus for a pheasant and quail hunt. I set out a couple of pheasant and few quail coveys in the Cabin Field around the timber point for Steve Sanders and his dogs to find. Steve caught a nice covey rise on camera.
Brad Shoults and Randy Rehkop added a third hunter, Jim Woelich to their quail hunting party. They brought out their pointers to find the quail coveys stashed along the west side of the Clubhouse Field. Some nice rises in the prairie and then a bunch of shooting in the fencerows and timber.
Brett Richson brought along is co-worker Andy Covey to hunt some pheasant and quail with his brittany Buck. This was Andy’s first quail hunt and Buck did a nice job as well as the hunters, coming back with a bonus quail.
Brett Richson came out with his young brittany, Buck for their weekly pheasant hunt. Buck did is usual nice job, picking up all the birds set out plus a couple extra.
