Bob Harling came down from Chicago to meet his brother, John and buddy Rich Delmotte for an overnight upland bird hunt. The first afternoon Steve Sanders took them on a pheasant and chukar hunt. They worked the big birds over the Clubhouse Field and down into the East Bottom Field. Great hunt, they got them plus an extra chukar. I smoked some chickens for dinner and woke them up with some biscuits and gravy. The next morning they hunted all quail with Travis Devall over at the Tinkerfarm Field. They didn’t get them all but they had some tough shooting in the timber and fencerows around the old pond bed.
Gary and Susan McMillin came out for a pheasant hunt with their two solid liver shorthairs, Gabby and Gizmo. This was a warm up hunt for the big one to come the next week, and the dogs did a nice job. Gary and the pups got most of the pheasants and picked up a spare quail.
Gene Hodge brought out his shorthair and his buddy Chuck Gurkin to hunt some pheasant and chukar on a warm February morning. I stashed some birds in the milo and prairie strips around the Clubhouse Field and Addie found them all, they even came back with an extra pheasant.
Brad Shoults brought out his two pointers, Ellie and Sammy and Randy Rehkop his pointer, Bud to hunt some quail. I set some coveys around the Cabin Field timber point. They busted up the coveys, killed a few and got to chase singles in the timber.
John McIntosh brought out his young setter, Binks to get some work on quail singles in the Clubhouse Field. Binks did a good job finding, pointing and holding the birds until John flushed them. I got out one of Binks littermates, Flip, to find a few quail for John also.
John Cavaletto and his pointer, Burl came out for a quail hunt. John likes to hunt singles, but sometimes set quail don’t preform as well as they can. So, I took his quail and scattered them into the field by releasing them from the Continental Shoot tower. The birds worked great and gave John and Burl a lot of good bird work.
Bob Dasenbrock invited his friend Derek Atchison our for a quail hunt along with his setter, Libby. Libby did a nice job finding the quail in the Clubhouse Field. They broke up some coveys, found the singles, but ended up trading in one of their quail for a found chukar.
