Brian Cremeens came up from Florida to do some family visits and catch a pheasant hunt with us at Sandy Run. Colton Wilkins brought up his duo of dogs to find the birds. A little taste of a Midwest bird hunt before heading back down to sunny Florida.
John McIntosh came down with two friends, Chris Cougill and John Williamson. They started out hunting some pheasant and chukar with Williamson’s Drahthaar, Bing. Then we put out some quail coveys and got out a few setters, Doo and Ava to help Bing with the bird finding. After a nice hunt, John McIntosh got his young setter, Binks, out of the truck to find some quail.
Our annual Youth Pheasant Hunt hosted by the Cumberland Trail Chapter of Quail and Upland Game Alliance is coming up on Saturday, January 28rd from 9 am to 4 pm. The cost is only $10/hunter, and each hunter will get to hunt for two pheasants, a door prize and food and drinks. Clay pigeon shooting will be available all day. This hunt has limited space, so please call to make your reservations for the time you desire to hunt. Participants must be 16 and younger, have a hunting license and be accompanied by an adult with a FOID card.
J.D. Stroud set up an upland bird hunt for his family, Jairen, Josh and Jeremy. Travis Devall brought out his setter, Zip and Patches to point the birds in the Clubshouse Field. This was Jairen’s first upland hunt and he knocked down a few the dogs found for him.
Ed and Trenton Rohrer brought out their young Munsterlander, Ruger to hunt some quail. Ruger was new to the bird game, so I set out a few singles in some light cover and then on to some mini-coveys in a little heavier cover. Ruger was getting the hang of this new game by the time he retrieved his last bird.
Ricky Alverez came from college in Colorado just to come out and hunt some pheasant and chukar with his dad, Bob. I filled the Clubhouse Field with birds and Jimmy Robinson took out my dogs to find them. They were both shooting well, each getting a chance to back each other up. I was able to sneak out to watch them knock down a few.
Paul, Jordan and Taylor Shaeffer came out to hunt with their buddies, Alex Bent and Allen Bryan. Steve Sanders brought out his pointers and lab to find the pheasant and quail I stocked in the Cabin Field. The five of them were quite efficient making short work of the coveys and pheasant coming out of the weedy milo and prairie edges. Nothing like good dog work and good shooting.
Paul Willms set up a pheasant and chukar hunt for his friends, Dustin Eccles, Todd Parke and Bob Fullar. This was Dustin’s first upland hunt and Sol, Doo, Mac and Ava got the honors of pointing and retrieving his first pheasants and chukar. Nice day in the Clubhouse field with some fine dog work and good shooting.
Roger Bacon came up from Georgia to visit family and stopped in to do a bit of pheasant and quail hunting. He got out his Brittanys and pointer to work the pheasants I set in the Cabin milo strips and the quail coveys in the prairie edges around the timber. Great way to spend Christmas Eve.
Kyle, Tyler and David Eaton came out for a pheasant hunt with their buddy Casey Simmons. Christmas Eve was a little warm and breezy so the pheasants I set in the Cabin Field were on the move early. They were still able to get enough for Christmas dinner for their whole family.
