Chris Lewis came out with his friend Tim Cincotta to work his German Shorthaired pointers on some quail. Chris brought the old veteran, Nitro and his new pup, Jetta to get some late season bird action. I put a couple of quail mini-coveys in the Clubhouse Field and Nitro and Jetta found them and worked the singles. Tim’s semi-auto turned into a single shot making for a lot of points and extra dog work. Great job by Jetta for her first time in the big field.
Gary McMillin set up a pheasant and chukar hunt for his two friends, Rob Prange and Joe Smith. I set out their birds in the Cabin Field, and Gary’s two German Shorthaired Pointers, Gabby and Gizmo cruised the prairie lined timber edges for their quarry. The group did well with only a couple of pheasant escaping into the warm, sunny woods.
Bill and Tony Warix came out on a beautiful, spring afternoon for a pheasant hunt. Not ideal conditions for pheasants but I hid some pheasants in the clubhouse field for their German Shorthaired Pointers, Whip and pup Lady, to find. The birds were up and moving and gave only a few chances for harvest.
Bob Touchette set up a pheasant and chukar hunt for his son, Nathan and buddies Dennis and Terry Asher. Bob borrowed his friend’s German Shorthaired Pointer, Nate to find the birds. I set out some birds and Nathan headed out on his first upland bird hunt. Nate did a great job finding and pointing the birds and after a few rises the hunters got a bead on the birds with Nathan getting his first rooster pheasant.
Gary McMillin brought his friend Neysa Downs and his two German Shorthaired Pointers, Gabby and Gizmo for a pheasant and chukar hunt. I filled the Clubhouse Field with birds and Gabby and Gizmo headed out to find them. The warm sunny weather had the pheasants and some of the chukar up and running around. Gabby and Gizmo were able to track down most of the scattered birds, leading to some interesting shooting situations.
Russ and Jared Houberg came out for a pheasant and chukar on a beautiful but muddy Saturday. I found some dry spots to stash some pheasant and chukar in the Pasture Field and Mac and Curly set out to find them. This was only Jared’s second time upland bird hunting and his first successful one. He knocked down a pheasant and a couple of chukar as the father and son combo got almost all their birds.
Alan Feezel came out with his German Shorthair pup, Harley to get some work on some pheasants. I set out a few in the Clubhouse Field and Harley found them all. He even found a rooster that got away a second time, but couldn’t come up with it a third, Alan will have to take the blame for missing that bird.
Dan Crunk came out for a quick workout for his two English Pointers, Millie and Flirt. I set out some quail singles in the Clubhouse Field for the dogs to work. First was Millie, then Flirt, then the pair. They did a great job finding and pointing and ended up a couple extra quail.
Larry Jones came out with his two pointers Bill and Julie along with his friends, Jimmy Robinson and Mike Beckett for a quail hunt. I set out a couple nice sized quail coveys in the Clubhouse Field. The birds did great, both coveys had nice rises scattering singles all over the sunny hillside.
Terry Knebel came out with his friends, Roger Well and Brad Bickhaus for a quail hunt. Terry enjoys hunting his German Shorthair pointer in the milo strips at the Tinkerfarm Field so I set some coveys out in the driest spots I could find in the melting snow. The quail did well, not running as much with the wet ground and flying out the thick milo. We ran into a bunch of extras looking for some birds that flew into thicker cover. Sadie did a great job and the guys got all but one of their birds.
