C.J. Spener put together a family pheasant and quail hunt with Dave and Logan Holder and Brian and Chris Favier. C.J. came with his faithful, 14 year old, German Shorthair, Gunther, and Steve Sanders helped guide the hunt with his two pointers, Sue and Rose. I filled the Clubhouse Field with pheasants and three coveys of quail. Gunther and the pointers hunted hard and the group came back with a pile of birds to replace turkey leftovers as their table fare.
Dwayne and Bill Quail and Chukar Hunt
Dwayne Ritchey wanted to chase some quail and chukar around the Clubhouse Field, so I put out a couple chukar doubles on the corners and nice sized quail covey in the center. Yadi and Sol got the honors to start the hunt and found all the birds. I tried to help Dwayne with the harvest, but did not add many to the pot. Ty even got in on the action, with some nice video of one birdy Labrador and yours truly hitting a chukar that disappeared in the afternoon sun.
Mark, Joe, Jordan and Tyler Pheasant Hunt
Marc Ing came out for a hunt with his boys, Joe and Jordan and friend Tyler Martin. The group chose to hunt pheasants so I filled the Clubhouse Field with quarry and gave Mac and Sol a chance to find the birds. The cool but windy morning got the birds moving, but staying in the heavy cover. The hunters had a lot of action with the dogs finding all the birds. Curly and Doo and called on to go out and find the scattered remnants, They found a few a second time as well as an extra pair that came up together in a nice pheasant double opportunity.
Bobby, Dick, Mike and Cole w/Pointing Labs Chukar Hunt
Bobby Halberstadt came out with his son, Cole and brother, Dick, along with Mike Bush for a chukar hunt. They grabbed their pointing labs and headed over the north end of the Tinkerfarm Field to hunt the chukar out of the milo strips. They spent a warm, windy morning chasing the chukar through the strips and into the prairie-lined fencerows and came back with nearly all. The pups even found a wild covey of quail in the west treeline which escaped without injury.
Bob and Flame Pheasant and Quail Hunt
Bob Dasenbrock brought out his English Setter pup, Flame for a quail and pheasant hunt. It was opening morning of firearm deer season, so we kept them close and hunted the Clubhouse Field. Flame did a good job tracking down the pheasants and quail on a cold morning that kept the birds sticking to the cover.
Criag, Alan and Steve w/ Colton Pheasant and Chuckar Hunt
Craig Scholz and Alan McRoberts decided to take a break from deer hunting to get in some chuakar and pheasant hunting. They brought along their deer guide, Steve Jones, and Craig’s lab, Colton. I stocked the Clubhouse Field with chukar for the first round and then a mix of chukar and pheasant for the next. Colton did a great job finding all the birds as well as an extra rooster and quail. Steve and Alan did most of the shooting, with Craig stepping up to down the last chukar
Brad and Trevor Upland Bird Hunt
Brad and Trevor Bickhaus came out for an upland bird hunt, with a mix of pheasant, quail and chukar. I stocked the Clubhouse Field with birds and roused Curly, German Wirehair, and Mac, English Setter, to do their part finding the birds. Brad picked the morning after the first snow of the season and the conditions were ideal, light breeze around 30F, and about 1/2″ of snow cover. The birds cooperated and the pair shared an enjoyable morning in the field.
Bobby, Mike and Cole w/ Toby, Cooper and Rocky Chukar Hunt
Bobby and Cole Halberstadt came out with their friend Mike Bush for a chukar hunt. They brought their three pointing labs, Toby, Cooper and Rocky to find, point and flush the birds scattered throughout the Clubhouse Field. First up was Rocky with Cole doing most of the shooting on this round. Cooper and Toby got to out next, finding all the birds and coming back with most.
Bob and Jason w/ Flame Pheasant and Quail Hunt
Bob and Jason Dasenbrock got together for a pheasant and quail hunt. To start, I set out a couple of quail for Edie, Jason’s Brittany, to find and chase, she did a good job finding both a couple of times. Then it was time for Flame, Bob’s young English Setter, to hunt. I set out some pheasant and quail pairs in the Clubhouse Field and the cold weather kept the birds fairly tight in the cover. Flame did a great job finding them all at least once with some nice finds on dead birds too.
Jim, Adam and CJ w/ Daisy Pheasant and Chukar Hunt
Jim and Adam Zeigler came out with CJ Goldstein for a pheasant and chukar hunt on Veterans Day. Greg Ireland guided the hunt using his dog, Daisy to find and retrieve the birds. I stocked the north end of the Tinkerfarm Field and the gusty winds woke the birds up and got them running through the milo and prairie. Even though the birds didn’t play fair the group still came back with most and some stories of how they might have harvested the rest.
