Adam Rea set up a hunt for his family and friend Scott Gagliardi. Some of the hunters had Travis Devall and the rest had Steve Sanders to guide their hunts. They did alright, coming back with almost all their pheasant and picking up a couple of bonus quail.
Larry Jones and Jimmy Robinson came out to hunt some quail with their pointer, Ike and brittany, King. I set some mini quail coveys around the old Tinkerfarm pond and they worked the prairie edges and then the timbered fencerows hunting the singles. Really nice work by the dogs and some fun woods shooting too.
Mushroom Fest 2017 will be held on Saturday, April 29th at 6 pm at the Sonnemann Cabin, one mile south of the Sandy Run Clubhouse. Come and enjoy some mushrooms, crawfish, corn, tators, chicken, fish and more. Bring and chair, what ever you like to drink, a couple of shrooms and a dish if you want. Always a great party, chance to meet other hunters and enjoy some awesome food.
James and Garrett Williams came down to hunt for a couple of days for some pheasant and chukar. The first day I set some pheasant in the Clubhouse Field and got Sol out to find them. Sol found a bunch and they brought most of them down. Doo and Ava came out to find the remainders and also found some quail. Some dinner, sleep and a nice breakfast later we went out after chukar in the Tinkerfarm Field. Sol and Ava pointed them all and with some fun shooting we came back with them all.
Rich Humphreys brought out his young brittany, Mason to hunt some pheasant, chukar and quail in the East Bottom Field. Mason did a nice job finding the birds and Rich overcame some gun malfunctions to knock down a few.
The Central Prairie Field Trial Club held the second Jimmy Mcnutt Memorial Amateur Shooting Dog Trail along the Derby, Gun Dog and Puppy Trails on March 25 at the Sandy Run fields. The Club used the Sandy Run Bottom Fields as the course for the trials. Rain was in the forecast for the entire day, but it stayed mostly dry except when I ran Flip in the puppy trial. Little wet and muddy but still some nice dog work and a fun day in the field.
Kevin and Tommy Diekroeger brought out their dogs, Ina, Penny and Abby to some quail hunt. I set some nice sized coveys around the old Tinkerfarm Pond and they busted them up, knocking down a few and chasing singles througth the fencerows. The next morning Kurt Diekroeger joined them and they did a repeat hunt with more birds and coming up with some from both days.
Perry Bumpus set up an upland bird hunt for his buddies, Bart Knight and Michael Herschbach. Steve Sanders brought out his two pointers and lab Stella to point and flush the pheasant, chukar and quail in the Clubhouse Field. Ava and Doo came out toward the end to help clean up some of the single quail spread around the field. Lots of birds and action in this video.
RichZumbahlen came out with his two lab, Shady and Coco to hunt some quail. I set some mini-coveys in the East Bottom Field and the labs searched the milo and prairie strips for the birds. I was able to capture a couple of rises before leaving Rich and the labs to search all the Sandy Run bottoms.
John Wright and Logan Stine came out for an afternoon of hunting and fishing. They allowed me to work a few puppies on their birds. First my young wirehair, Hildy, got to hunt some chukar, then Flip a young setter I am training got to work some quail. Finally I got some big dogs out, Doo, Ava and Mac to go after some pheasant. I cooked up some of our game for dinner, before we ran their dogs on some coon.
