Dr. Dan and Colton Weimer came down from northern Indiana to do some snow goose hunting on Carlyle Lake. They stayed the night, harvested some geese and then went out for an afternoon pheasant hunt. Travis Devall brought out his two setters, Zip and Patches to hunt the Cabin Field. Great hunt, they got all their pheasant and picked up a couple chukar.
I only had a few hunters for the President’s Day Continental Pheasant Shoot, so we did some experimenting. We placed the shooter about 25 yards away from the tower and had them shooting at the pheasants coming over the back of their heads. It worked well with a bunch of shooting and about the same percentage of birds shot as the regular Continental Pheasant Shoot. Ray Takmajian and Rich Viera brought out their spaniels to pick up the downed birds. I got Sol, Ava and Doo out to for a clean up hunt, that came up with a few pheasants and a few quail.
Larry Jones brought out his pair of pointing dogs, Ike and King to find the quail coveys I set out in the Clubhouse Field. Jimmy Robinson and Brian Lewis came along to help with the dog work and bird harvest. Check it out you have to be fast, if you are gonna get a shot with Larry in the field.
Charlie Durbin set up an upland bird hunt for his friends, Mike Kuhns and Clint and Clayton Green. I set out a couple pheasant, some chukar and quail coveys in the Clubhouse Field on a warm, breezy morning. The pheasant were on the run from the start, Sol and Mac were able to find the chukar and the quail, but could not nail down the pheasant. Later on Doo and Ava were able to find the pheasant. No matter what we tried we just couldn’t get Clayton a shot at a pheasant, but he was able to harvest some quail and chukar.
Greg came out with his buddies, Troy Patillo and Mike Yociss to hunt some quail and pheasant. Greg’s dog, Daisy, came along to find the birds I set out in the Clubhouse Field. They found all the birds and came back with most, giving Mike a chance to try some more upland bird recipes.
Mark and Chris Perkowski came out with their two labs, Roy and Di along with their friends, Richard Perez and Connor Hasenmueller for an upland bird hunt. They hunted mostly quail in the Cabin Field with a couple chukar and pheasant thrown in to keep it interesting. Connor was fairly new to upland bird hunting but he nailed the big rooster after everyone else failed to knock it down.
Bob Dasenbrock brought out his young setter, Libby, to hunt for some chukar. Libby found the birds and Bob knocked down most with his new 28ga. The duo missed one chukar, but traded it for leftover pheasant.
John Cavaletto came out with his friends, Michael Long and Terry Schierholz for an upland bird hunt. John brought along his English Pointer, Burl, to find and point the birds spread around the Clubhouse Field. Burl did a nice job on a pleasant day when the birds were on the move.
John McIntosh came out with his young setter pup, Binx, to get him in front of some quail. Binx did a fine job finding the birds I set around the Clubhouse Field and is coming along nicely.
Ray Takmajian and Rich Viera brought out their flushing dogs for a little pheasant work. I set out a couple of pheasant for each dog and they worked on their flushing, steadiness and retrieving. Not only did they get all of their birds they came up with two bonus pheasant.
