2014 Youth Pheasant Hunt

Sandy Run Hunt Co. and the Cumberland Chapter of the Quail and Upland Game Alliance held their annual Youth Pheasant Hunt on January 25th.  Thirty young hunters got a chance to hunt for a couple of pheasant on a cold, blustery day.  With wind gusts over 30mph the pheasants did not cooperate for everyone, but most hunters got an opportunity if not a pheasant or two to take home.  There was plenty of clay target shooting, with over 500 targets shot at over the frozen ponds.   Congratulations to Chase Horn, he won the drawing for a pheasant mount donated by Freedom Taxidermy.

Check out the video below to see all the fun.

Thanks to all the parents and friends who took the time to bring out the kids.  Thanks for letting them have the opportunity to enjoy and learn from a day out in the field.  I appreciate all the time and effort of the guides and their dogs which helped to make each hunters’ experience memorable.

I would also like to thank the Cumberland Chapter of the Quail and Upland Game Alliance for all their help and donations, Midwest Target Co.  Litchfield, for providing the clay pigeons, Buchheit of Greenville for providing some of the prizes, County Market of Vandalia for their donation of hotdogs and buns, Freedom Taxidermy of Vandalia for donating a pheasant mount, Ritchey Painting of Vandalia for their donation of the use of an UTV.

Larry, Mark and Joe Upland Bird Hunt

Larry Kleiner brought out his friends Joe Mioux and Mark Meyer for an afternoon upland bird hunt.  Larry came with his two German Shorthairs, Trigger and Holly, while Joe brought his English Pointer, Ginger.  Some real nice points with all three dogs locked down quail coveys and singles.  Mark got to shoot his first chukar partridge on a double rise with larry knocking down the other.

Don, Tyler, Luke and Ruby Pheasant and Chukar Hunt

Don Cooper came out with his two sons, Tyler and Luke, and chocolate lab, Ruby.  They went after some pheasant and chukar.  Ruby did a good job finding the birds and the boys did great knocking them down.  Don had the shot of the year on a  pair of chukars, slowed the first one down with the first shot and then took both out with the second.  Unfortunately no video proof due to dead camera battery, but both Ruby and I witnessed the shot.

Mike’s First Upland Bird Hunt

Chuck Johnson brought out his veterinarian, Dr. Michael Douglas, for his first upland bird hunt.   Shed, Chuck’s German Shorthair, did an awesome job on the pheasant, chukar and quail.  Shed even tracked down all of a six bird covey when five got away on the rise.  Mike starts catching up with the chukar and quail and knocks a few down.

Charlie, Tanner, Mike, Stan, Kyle and Burl Upland Bird Hunt

Charlie Durbin put together a breakfast meeting and upland bird hunt for Stan, Mike and Kyle Kuhns.  Dr. Tanner Kirby, Charlie’s new veterinarian came out for his first bird hunt.  Burl Brumfield brought out Lucy, Buck and Jack, English Pointers and did a great job with the guiding.  After a breakfast of biscuits and gravy, eggs and fried potatoes, the field got filled with birds while Charlie held a business meeting.  Lots of action in this video, some nice covey rises and chukar flushes.
