Roy Evans and his buddy Trent Yokely came out for an upland bird hunt. I filled the Clubhouse Field with pheasant, chukar and quail and got Curly and Doo to find the birds. They knocked down almost all the birds raised so I went back to get more birds along with a couple more dogs to extend our afternoon hunt. Tons of bird hunting action in this video from a fun hunt.
Bill Warix has some German Shorthair Pointer puppies for sale. These dogs are out of his male, Whip and his son’s bitch, Lady. Both dogs have been out here at Sandy Run hunting pheasant and quail and have a lot of drive to find birds. Contact Bill at 314 565-6274 for more information.
Dave Schumacher set up a hunt for his buddies, Doug Hayes, Larry Kleiner and Marc Seale. They brought along their dogs, Dan, Daisy, Holly and Chica, respectively. I set some quail coveys in the Tinkerfarm Field and they elimated the first one that got up in 3 rises, their hunt got more interesting after that with some coveys flying to prairie strips and timber around the edges of the field. That turned out to be a good thing, because they found three pheasants hiding out in the fencerows. Marc got Chica, his young, Golden Retriever, a little work by herself on a couple of chukar in the Clubhouse Field. She did a good job, finding and flushing both, one twice and a couple of nice retrieves.
Gene Hodge and Chuck Gurkin came out for a pheasant and chukar hunt along with Gene’s young shorthair, AddieMay. Addie did a nice job finding, pointing and retrieving the birds. The pheasants behaved well with only one trying to run away (switched to flying and came down). While trying to find their wayward Chukar, Addie found some extra quail too.
The Central Prairie Field Trial Club will be holding its spring trial here in the Sandy Run Hunt Co. fields on March 19-20, 2016. Saturday will have the Jimmy Dale McNutt Memorial Amateur Shooting Dog, Amateur Derby, Amateur Gun Dog, and Amateur Puppy Trials. Sunday trials will be the Open Shooting Dog, Open Derby and Open Puppy. Check out the flyer below.
If you have a good hunting dog, you should consider entering in the Amateur Gun Dog Trial. The dogs in this trial run the course with another dog, need to be able to find birds, back dogs on point and hold their point until the bird flushes. Sounds like your dog can do that easy enough, bring him out, maybe you will get one of mine in a brace.
If you are looking for hunting dogs and puppies, you can make some contacts with some folks who know where there are some of the nicest hunting dogs for sale or on the way. Plus the trials give anyone a chance to see some classy looking dogs in action. Bring your horse, ATV or walking shoes to be part of the gallery.
Brad Bickhaus came out with all his friends for an upland bird hunt. There were enough hunters for me to spread pheasant, chukar and quail around three fields. After piling up a bunch of harvested birds, Brad started to fry fish, hushpuppies, ect. Always a good time when Brad comes out for a hunt with his buddies.
Christian Smith and Dwayne Ritchey came out for an upland bird hunt. I set out some pheasant, quail and chukar in the Clubhouse and got Curly and Doo to start out the hunt. This was Christian’s first upland hunt so Dwayne was primarily on back up duty. Christian didn’t need much help with his new Ruger, but Dwayne helped knock down a few. The warm day meant it was time to switch dogs after a bit so, Sol, Ava and Mac got to do some clean up. They ended up with more birds than I released so must have been some good shooting and dog work.
Scott Stewart set up a chukar for his friends Jon Shadduck and Matt Wallace. They brought along their setters, Joey and Enders to find, point and retrieve their birds. Even with the warm weather the chukar held tight and flew hard. I set the chukar doubles next to the wooded edge in hopes that hunters may have to chase a few through the timber, but they didn’t miss when I was around.
John Cavaletto and Larry Ackerman came out for a quail hunt. John brought his pointer, Burl and Larry his shorthair, McCallister to find the birds. I stocked the north Cabin Field with some quail coveys and the dogs found them. Some of the birds made it to the timber and the shooters made some nice shots through the trees.
Brien Guy came out for a quail hunt with his pointer, Rex and buddy Stan Soldner and his setters, Tex, Mutt and Pearl. I set some quail coveys in the Clubhouse Field for the dogs to find and point. The warm, sunny day had the quail on the move but they had a nice hunt with a lot of points throughout the field.
