First Continental Pheasant Shoot Coming Up October 30th

The Sandy Run Hunt Co. Continental Pheasant Shoot simulates an European, driven hunt consisting of pass shooting.

The day will begin at 8:30 with morning snacks and coffee. Wobble trap will be available before the shoot for warming up.  The pheasant shoot will start after 9 am and be held in the Clubhouse Field. Pheasants will be released from a raised platform in the center of the field, with 12 to 16 shooting stations placed around the field.   A round of birds will be released, equal to the number of shooters. After each round we will retrieve the downed birds before moving to another shooting station for the next round. This will continue for 12 rounds and all shooters have had an opportunity at each station. We will have retrieving dogs available or you are welcome to bring your own.

After the hunt around 12:30 all the birds will be cleaned and divided equally among the shooters. Lunch will be served in the clubhouse..

There will be 12 pheasants released for each shooter and the hunt will be limited to 24 shooters.

This shoot includes morning snacks, trap practice, 12 released pheasants, cleaned and packaged birds and lunch after the hunt.

The cost is $250/shooter. You can also share a stand with one other hunter for $300.  Afternoon cleanup hunts are available at $25/hunter.   Fields will be assigned on a first come basis.

Participants are required to wear eye protection, blaze orange hats and vests. 12, 16 or 20 gauge shotguns are recommended.   Ammunition should be #6, high brass shells, no shot larger than #6 will be allowed for the Continental Shoot. It is suggested that you bring a minimum of 3 boxes of ammunition.

Please make a deposit to ensure your spot in our next Continental Shoot will be Sunday, October 30, 2022

If you make a deposit and are unable to attend, your deposit can be used for our next shoot or returned.

Continental shoots are also available for private parties or corporate events.  Please inquire about minimum numbers of hunters and pricing.

Sandy Run Upland Fields: The West Cabin Field

Sandy Run Hunt Co.Upland Fields: The West Cabin Field. The West Cabin Field is located on the south west corner of the Sonnemann Woods section. Parking is on the east end of the field, just past the cabin driveway. The main part of the field is a shorter mixture of little blue stem, partridge pea, various grasses and forbs. Plenty of room to have two to three big quail coveys, a bunch of chukar, even a pheasant or three.

Sandy Run’s Newest Field: Pasture Field 2.0

The Pasture Field is located in the North West corner of the Sandy Run Property. Sitting just West of the Clubhouse Field and North of the West Bottom Field. The Pasture Field has a mix of established prairie, new prairie, bottomland grasses and trees and assorted spots of timber. The Pasture Field is just a short walk from the Clubhouse, ~400 yards. Crossing through the tree line separating the Pasture form the Clubhouse Field there is a small prairie field with Heaven’s Half Acre to the South and a small pond to the North.

This season we converted an alfalfa field to a mix of prairie, milo and millet. East and West of the new prairie are some older, more established prairie fields. In the Northern part, the old creek bottom has some grassy cover mixed with a few small Ash and Locust trees. The North Branch of Sandy Run Creek runs along the West edge. The Pasture Field is good throughout the season with some lighter cover for early fall but enough heavy cover left for March hunts. The mix of prairie, bottoms and timber make for some fun shooting.

QUGA Cumberland Chapter Annual Banquet

Come out and support our Quail and Upland Game Alliance chapter banquet coming up on Saturday, Oct. 8th. It’s a fun evening and good dinner, this year catered by The Blind Society. QUGA helps landowners with improving the wildlife habitat, provides grants for local habitat work, supplies all the birds and prizes for our youth hunt and contributes to other youth related outdoor activities. Plus lots of guns, art and other goodies will be raffled or auctioned, great chance for some awesome deals.
