Bill Warix redeemed himself with some nice shooting in this early season pheasant hunt. Alan Feezel helped out on some long shots on hens, while the young German Shorthair Whip, found all the birds in the big, thick clubhouse field.
Tim and Dave w/ Chris, Seth and Nitro Pheasant and Quail Hunt
Chris Lewis came out with his German Shorthair, Nitro to take some friends, Tim Cincotta and Dave Hartter on a pheasant and quail hunt. Dave’s son, Seth, came along to take in the action and experience his first bird hunt. I was able to get some pheasants and a couple quail coveys out in the clubhouse field between rain showers and drizzle. The warm, rainy and windy day made it a challenging hunt, but Nitro was up for the challenge and found all the birds, but one quail.
Kevin, Penny and Ina on a Drizzlly Quail Hunt
Kevin Diekroeger came out with his two buddies Ina and Penny for an early season quail hunt. I put out a couple of big coveys in the Clubhouse Field and the Setter and German Wirehair pair found them. I helped Kevin with the harvest as Karen donned the camera for the hunt. A light to heavy drizzle muted the rises, but Kevin still had a chance at a slow motion triple.
Greg and Daisy, Early Season Quail Hunt
Greg Ireland brought out Daisy for some early season quail practice. I put out some double sets in the Clubhouse Field, and Daisy found them all, she even found a left over pheasant. The cover was thick and the air was thick with mist but the birds still performed nicely. Great way to start out the season.
Hunting Field Series – The Cabin Field
Sandy Run Hunt Co has close to 600 acres available for upland bird hunting, one of these areas is a 150 acre plot we call The Cabin Field. The Cabin Field offers a mixture of prairie-lined fencerows and timber edges, along with prairie fields, timber and cropland for hunting cover. Great spot for a “just like wild” quail hunt or some fun pheasant hunting. You can hunt the whole field or just do a short hunt around the southern timber finger. You get some nice covey rises in the prairie followed up by some fun dog work and interesting shooting once the singles get into the woods.
Bill, Tony and Whip – First Pheasant Hunt of the Season
Bill Warix brought out his son Tony and young German Shorthair, Whip for an early season pheasant hunt. The birds were busting out of the thick cover and the summer rust was still on the wingshooting. Whip found all the birds and a couple twice, the cool morning made for an enjoyable time in the field.
Land For Sale – Investment/Hunting
My family has 40 acres for sale in Fayette County, IL. The ground is located about 2 miles west of Hagarstown off Highway 140. The legal description would be the northeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section 33 Bear Grove Township.
There are 32 tillable acres, 8 of these acres are currently farmed. The remaining 24 tillable acres have been in the CRP tree program for 29 years. The current contract is valid until 2020 and pays around $1,900 annually. The 8 acres of tillable ground could be cash rented for $160/acre.
The remaining 8 acres is in timber mixed among fencerows and the hillside on the south end of the property.
This is a great piece of property for someone looking for some ground and who also likes to deer hunt. Lots of deer on this property, the thick growth from the tree program and timber edges has made this a nice sanctuary. We have taken some nice deer off this property and some incredible sheds. Check out the pics below.
Incredible investment at $3,500/acre. Call me with any questions 618 292 8680

The second in this series highlights the Tinkerfarm Field. This 120 acre plot is a great place for a “just like old times” quail hunt with prairie-lined fencerows, timber and prairie fields.
Hunting Field Series – The Clubhouse Field
Our Hunting Field Series is designed to show you all the possible fields that are available at Sandy Run Hunt Co. for your next upland bird hunt. The first in the series describes the field just out my back door, The Clubhouse Field.
Last Upland Bird Hunt of the Season w/ Zach Collins
Zach Collins chose the last day of the season to have his first hunt of the season. High of 48 and cloudy with a bit of wind, not bad for April 15th. I emptied the bird cages of pheasant, chukar and quail and scattered them throughout the non-burned leftovers of the Clubhouse Field. Yadi, the yearling Setter, got to go on his first hunt with a client along with Curly. The seasoned wirehair and the setter pup did a fine a job and after getting through the pheasants, a couple of chukar and a quail covey, it was back to the kennels. Sol, Mac and Doo got to play clean up and Zach shot well with only one pheasant escaping til next season.
